Robert Bluey on Social Media Summit: "Heavy-Handed Government Regulation Is Not the Answer"

WASHINGTON — Several leaders from The Heritage Foundation attended today’s White House Social Media Summit with President Donald Trump. Robert Bluey, vice president of communications and executive editor of The Daily Signal, released the following statement on the summit:

“The Social Media Summit was a welcome opportunity to listen to and talk with the 250 other digital leaders, members of Congress, and Cabinet secretaries who came to the White House.

“The focus of the summit was to celebrate the success of social media and the importance of free speech. Altogether, attendees at the summit have half a billion social media followers and are reaching people directly without a media filter. That’s why their concerns about the implications of bias and censorship are so important.

“Heavy-handed government regulation is not the answer. Everyone who cares about free speech, regardless of their political beliefs, should want social media companies to be responsive to their users, not government. There’s evidence the market is working and social media companies are responding.”
