WASHINGTON—Jerry Hume, a member of The Heritage Foundation Board of Trustees and the Heritage Action for America Board of Directors, died Jan. 23 in California. Heritage Foundation Board Chairman Barb Van Andel-Gaby and Heritage Action Board Chairman Nersi Nazari issued the following statement on Hume’s legacy.
“Many people have worked behind the scenes to make The Heritage Foundation a world-class think tank, but few have contributed more than Jerry Hume—a voice of rigorous reason, common sense, and good conscience in even the most challenging circumstances. He was a vital part of our board since 1993, offering insightful counsel over the past 30 years.
“Jerry encouraged us to focus on policy solutions that led to Americans ‘living the good life.’ He did so with a staunch commitment to the principles of the conservative movement—economic freedom, federalism, rule of law, and entrepreneurship. Jerry loved America and helping his fellow citizens flourish. He was always willing to explore and test new ideas based on the tried-and-true tenets of conservatism.
“Jerry also served as a director of the Heritage Action for America Board of Directors, providing wisdom and sage advice since his appointment in 2013. Jerry was enthusiastic about making Washington work for the American people and encouraged us all to focus on civic engagement and family.
“Outside of Heritage, Jerry was a proud Navy veteran and devoted his time and talents to improving education standards. He served on the boards of the California State Board of Education, the Foundation for Teaching Economics, the Center for Education Reform, and the California Council for Economic Education. He also spearheaded initiatives to expand school choice and improve literacy for young Americans.
“Jerry excelled in business as well as education advocacy, building the family business, Basic American, Inc., into an international food service company. Throughout it all, however, the main focus of Jerry’s life was family. He was married to his wife Patti for over 60 years and cherished the time he spent with his children and grandchildren. Jerry and Patti often shared stories of their world travels and remarked how they ‘were running out of places to visit.’
“We mourn the loss of this wonderfully caring, deeply committed patriot. Our prayers are with his family this day.”
