STATEMENT: Infrastructure Review Executive Order Rejects Status Quo

Yesterday, President Trump signed a new executive order aimed at speeding up the environmental review and permitting process for new infrastructure projects. Heritage transportation expert Michael Sargent sees this development as a rejection of the status quo, below is more of what Sargent had to say:

"The President’s Executive Order to accelerate and reform the environmental review and permitting process is a welcome sign that the administration views the burdensome status quo as unacceptable. Excessive delays caused by the permitting and review processes set projects back by years—decades in many cases—and needlessly waste billions of taxpayer dollars to the detriment of our infrastructure and the larger economy. Heritage has recently called for many permitting and environmental reforms to expedite the approval process, and we are thrilled that the President agrees that these reforms should be a priority. While the onerous government approval process is just one of the many federal barriers that must be addressed, the president’s EO is a promising development towards dismantling unnecessary roadblocks that inhibit responsible infrastructure investment."
