Heritage Applauds House Passage of Legislation to Protect Elections

WASHINGTON—The Heritage Foundation applauds the House passage of the SAVE America Act, which would require voters to provide proof of citizenship, eliminate mail-in-only registrations, and require a photo ID in every state for voting in federal elections.

Cully Stimson, acting director of Heritage’s Institute for Constitutional Government, and Lora Ries, director of Heritage's Border Security and Immigration Center, made the following statement:

“This legislation is a step in the right direction of stopping the abuse in America’s voter registration that has allowed non-citizens to register and vote illegally in federal elections. Requiring proof of citizenship to register to vote and a photo ID to vote are commonsense measures, largely supported by Americans, that ensure free and fair elections.

“Heritage’s Election Fraud Map has plenty of proof that our nation’s elections are vulnerable to fraud and need reforms like those in the SAVE America Act to make sure Americans, and only Americans, are voting in U.S. elections.”
