Heritage, Sen. Rick Scott Join Forces for Video Series on Reckless Government Spending

Jul 30, 2021

“Road Trip on a Budget,” produced by Heritage staff and narrated by Senator Rick Scott, uses and animation to educate Americans about the government’s spending and debt problem.

Congress is once again confronting a decision about increasing America’s debt limit. To raise awareness about the federal government’s out-of-control spending and encourage lawmakers to embrace fiscally responsible policies, The Heritage Foundation teamed up with Sen. Rick Scott on a new video series.

“Road Trip on a Budget,” produced by Heritage staff and narrated by Scott, uses storytelling and animation to educate Americans about the government’s spending and debt problem.

“Reckless government spending has driven America’s federal debt to nearly $30 trillion,” says Scott. “Now, thanks to the insane tax-and-spending spree of President Joe Biden and Democrats in Washington, we are seeing six straight months of raging inflation.

“We need to make government more efficient, cut taxes, reduce regulations and focus on creating an economy where businesses can thrive and create more jobs for American families. That’s the playbook. It worked in Florida, and it will work for the entire nation.”

Heritage and Scott released five episodes in the “Road Trip on a Budget” series, which are available to watch on Facebook and YouTube.

After the release of the final episode, Matthew Dickerson, director of Heritage’s Hermann Center for the Federal Budget, thanked Scott for his partnership on the project:

The importance of Congress exercising spending restraint instead of continuing down the path of seemingly endless, reckless federal spending cannot be understated. For instance, Democrats are looking to pass a $3.5 trillion budget kickstarting the reconciliation process to pass all of their legislative priorities, including non-budget related policies like mass amnesty, and few are talking about the consequences. Thanks to Sen. Rick Scott’s leadership, more Americans will be able to learn about the dangers of big-government spending adding recklessly to the national debt and increasing inflation, and by extension, prices of good Americans buy every day.

Heritage Foundation President Kay C. James added, “What Heritage and Sen. Rick Scott have done with the ‘Road Trip on a Budget’ series is package this kind of critical knowledge in a format that’s understandable, compelling, and accessible to everyone. The American people deserve to know how rampant government spending is affecting their future and the importance of a more fiscally responsible path forward.”

The Biden administration and Democrats have embraced exorbitant spending, including the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan, $2.7 trillion American Jobs Plan, and $1.8 trillion American Families Plan. These policies, if passed into law, would all grow the federal government to unprecedented levels, inserting more government control into nearly every facet of American life.

In addition, President Biden and congressional leaders have indicated they will soon adopt a budget resolution starting the reconciliation process that includes $3.5 trillion in new spending for every major, radical, socialist policy item that Biden has requested.

The series was produced by Heritage’s senior multimedia producer Mark Guiney with support from graphic designer Lydia Emrich. Multimedia director Lauren Evans and digital specialists Philip Reynolds provided support along with Dickerson and Paul Winfree, director of the Roe Institute for Economic Policy Studies as well as the Richard F. Aster fellow.
