Key Takeaways

Liz Truss is one of the few British politicians who really understand the United States and the direction America’s conservative movement is taking.

Liz Truss understands that American conservative voters share a close ideological affinity with their British counterparts and have many of the same concerns.

The next decade will be vital for standing up to the Left’s nefarious open borders, big government, and ultra-woke agenda.

Liz Truss is one of the few British politicians who really understand the United States and the direction America’s conservative movement is taking. Since stepping down as prime minister, she has worked tirelessly to build ties with U.S. conservatives, including key Members of Congress, and is undoubtedly better known on Capitol Hill than her successor. Many Americans I have spoken to wish she were still the British Prime Minister, and she is widely admired in conservative circles here.

Truss rightly understands that the Left-wing Biden presidency has been a catastrophe for the free world and called this week on U.S. television for a true conservative president in the White House, “one who is able to take on the deep state and lead the free world.”

In her very well-received speech to the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) yesterday just outside of the Washington Beltway, she declared that “President Biden was asleep at the wheel at the White House.” This is a completely accurate assessment.

In marked contrast to the far weaker approach taken by the Sunak government, Truss is calling out the disaster that is “Bidenomics” and the immense border crisis the United States is facing under his reckless administration. Disappointingly, Britain’s Conservative government has not done enough to cultivate ties with America’s rising conservative movement, and has shied away from any real criticism of Biden’s incredibly damaging policies.

U.S. polls project the strong possibility of a Republican presidency taking over from January 2025, with Donald Trump leading the race for his party’s nomination. Britain’s political leaders should be laying the foundations for a strong U.S.-British partnership in a likely post-Biden era, with a potential second Trump administration. Key figures outside of government, most notably Liz Truss and Nigel Farage, are already doing this on the ground in Washington. Both shared a lively and energetic panel discussion at CPAC.

The reality is that the Biden presidency has been hugely damaging for the U.S./UK Special Relationship, and Biden himself has been the most anti-British American president of the modern era. Biden and his pro-EU administration have actively worked to undermine Brexit as well as the British government over Northern Ireland and an Anglo-American trade deal. In contrast, Trump has championed Brexit and has been fully committed in the past to a trade agreement between Washington and London.

Liz Truss understands that American conservative voters share a close ideological affinity with their British counterparts and have many of the same concerns. She is a leading voice calling for conservatives on both sides of the Atlantic to increasingly work together to fight for a common agenda to defeat the Left, including fighting for secure borders, tight controls on immigration, low tax policies that advance economic freedom and reduce the size and power of the administrative state, a fundamental rejection of woke cultural ideology, and a determination to confront the enemies of the free world, especially Communist China.

In her CPAC address, before the largest annual gathering of conservatives in the United States, Truss urged the American people to channel the idealism and dreams of the Founding Fathers, standing firm on the principles that have driven America’s inspiring success for the last 250 years.

The clarion call that Liz Truss is sending across the Atlantic, and which will be amplified in her forthcoming book “Ten Years to Save the West,” is frankly the message the British government should be sending as well. Conservative politicians must stand up for conservative principles, policies and values, and in her words “cannot compromise with Communists and terrorists” who seek to destroy Western civilization.

The next decade will be vital for standing up to the Left’s nefarious open borders, big government, ultra-woke agenda, one that seeks to subvert the great achievements the West has made over the course of several centuries. It is a fight that must be won.
