Summary

Special interest groups have proposed legislation in the states and in Congress that would enshrine a person’s subjective self-perception of their gender (gender identity) in civil rights law as a protected class equivalent to immutable characteristics such as race and sex. But a majority of Americans do not support forcing transgender ideology on others, including parents, doctors, nurses, business owners, charities, and women. Nearly three in four registered voters say parents should not lose custody of their children for refusing to allow their child to use drugs or hormones to transition (73%). Two-thirds say that business owners should not be forced to pay for (69%) and doctors and nurses should not be forced to perform (68%) sex reassignment surgeries. A similar proportion say men who identify as women should not have access to women’s bathrooms or locker rooms (63%) and non-profits and charities should have the freedom to determine whether or not to provide products or services that affirm gender transition (65%).
