WASHINGTON—The Heritage Foundation today released the following statements praising The Supreme Court’s 6-3 ruling in Mahmoud v. Taylor, determining that Montgomery County’s public school system was infringing on parents’ religious liberties in compelling elementary school children to take part in lessons on sexuality and gender ideology without any notice or opt-out option.
Tiffany Justice, visiting fellow for coalitions and chair of the Parental Rights Initiative at The Heritage Foundation, made the following statement:
“The Supreme Court’s ruling is a resounding victory for parents across America, affirming their fundamental right to guide their children’s moral and religious upbringing.
“We owe immense gratitude to the courageous parents, like Tamer Mahmoud, who bravely stepped forward as plaintiffs in this landmark case. This decision protects family values and religious freedom from ideological overreach, sending a clear warning to every public school in America: respect the sacred, fundamental rights of parents, or face the consequences.”
Thomas Jipping, a senior legal fellow in the Edwin Meese III Center for Legal and Judicial Studies at The Heritage Foundation, added:
“The Supreme Court affirmed that the right to freely exercise religion, including how to raise children, is a fundamental, inalienable right. The lower courts in this case treated religious freedom as an insignificant afterthought, but the Supreme Court reminded us that the Constitution trumps the state’s ideological agenda.”
Earlier this month, Heritage launched the Parental Rights Network, a powerful new platform within its Parental Rights Initiative, dedicated to creating collaboration to equip parents with the tools to safeguard their fundamental rights and make informed decisions for their children.
