WASHINGTON—Today, The Heritage Foundation congratulated President Trump, President Aliyev, and Prime Minister Pashinyan on the signing of a ceasefire between Azerbaijan and Armenia, brokered by the United States.
This agreement formally ends hostilities between the two nations, which have fought multiple wars since the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991, resulting in thousands of casualties.
Victoria Coates, vice president of the Kathryn and Shelby Cullom Davis Institute for National Security and Foreign Policy at Heritage, underscored the significance of this deal:
“President Trump is making conflict resolution the cornerstone of his second term national security policy. Building on the tremendous and enduring success of the Abraham Accords at the end of his first term, these agreements reflect a pattern: a testimony to the success of the President’s policy of peace through strength. This deal is a reminder that strong American leadership can end wars and sends a signal to aggressors everywhere that peace is possible when the United States leads. I commend the accomplishments of U.S. Special Envoy for Peace Missions Steve Witkoff and his negotiating team, led by Aryeh Lightstone. The opportunities created by this deal are enormous, especially the possibility that additional countries may join the Abraham Accords.”
This deal marks the fourth peace agreement by President Trump since his return to the White House in January. In just under seven months, the Trump administration has helped negotiate peace between:
-
India and Pakistan
-
Thailand and Cambodia
-
The Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda
-
Now, Azerbaijan and Armenia
In contrast, the previous four years saw the emergence of new major armed conflicts around the world, underscoring the urgency of proactive diplomacy, the likes of which made the peace deal between Azerbaijan and Armenia possible.
Robert Greenway, director of the Allison Center for National Security at Heritage, added:
“Today, we witnessed yet another historic peace agreement from the consummate deal maker President Trump and U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff. Not only does this deal bring an end to decades of bloodshed, but it protects an ancient Christian community, secures a vital regional ally in a strategic location, safeguards critical energy supplies, diminishes Russian influence, and provides significant economic benefits for the United States. The world is in better standing today because the Trump administration pursued peace.”
The Heritage Foundation will continue to support advancements of a more peaceful, secure, and prosperous future for America and its allies.
