The Kentucky Legislature overrode Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear's veto of House Bill 1 on March 17 with votes of 77-14 in the House and 31-5 in the Senate.

This override makes Kentucky the 28th state to opt into President Trump's new school-choice program and the first state legislature to do so without the consent of the governor.

The federal tax credit scholarship program, launched by the Trump administration early this year, provides a dollar-for-dollar federal tax credit to donors who contribute to scholarship-granting organizations.

Donors can give their money to organizations like ACE Scholarships to receive the tax credit. These organizations then issue scholarships that families use for private school tuition and homeschooling expenses.
