WASHINGTON—The Heritage Foundation congratulates Puerto Rico and New Fortress Energy for reaching an agreement to provide up to 75 trillion British thermal units a year (TBtu) of natural gas for seven years to Puerto Rico.
Diana Furchtgott-Roth, director of the Center for Energy, Climate, and Environment and Joyce Morgan Fellow in Energy and Environmental Policy released the following statement:
“Liquefied natural gas is essential to America’s energy security and economic growth. By embracing President Trump’s LNG agenda, Gov. Jenniffer González-Colón is helping ensure that Puerto Rico has access to affordable, reliable, and cleaner American energy.”
Liquefied natural gas (LNG) is vital for America’s economic strength and energy security. Expanding LNG production and exports reduces reliance on unstable foreign energy sources, creates a strong manufacturing base with well-paying jobs, and delivers lower costs to families, farmers, and businesses. For Puerto Rico, LNG represents a practical solution to long-standing energy challenges.
By replacing costly imported oil with affordable American LNG, Puerto Rico can strengthen its electricity grid, attract investment, and ensure a reliable supply of cleaner energy for households and manufacturers.
Heritage commends Gov. Jenniffer González-Colón for embracing President Trump’s LNG agenda for energy security. Her leadership shows how aligning with a forward-looking national strategy can deliver affordable, reliable, and cleaner energy to the people of Puerto Rico while strengthening America’s role as an energy superpower.
