Summary

Schools across the country are seeing an influx of teaching and policies around sexual orientation and gender identity. However, Americans are showing a wariness of policies that would impact children and teens. The majority oppose allowing students to compete on sports teams (58%) or use private facilities (53%), such as showers or locker rooms, assigned to the opposite biological sex. A similar proportion (57%) oppose allowing minors with gender dysphoria to receive medical interventions that would aid in gender transition, such as puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and surgeries. Americans do not want the government forcing others to pay for or provide these treatments. About six in 10 Americans oppose employers and insurers being forced to pay for these treatments (66%) and medical professionals being required to perform these procedures (59%).
