Description

The life script many of us grew up chanting, “first comes love, then comes marriage, then comes a baby in a carriage,” feels increasingly out of reach and even looked down upon in today’s culture. It is not hard to see why. Many women who hope for marriage struggle to find a partner. Others look at the cost of housing, childcare, and everyday life and wonder how they could possibly afford the family they desire. Still others are trying to balance meaningful work with the real demands of marriage and raising children well.

Of course, there is no single blueprint that fits every woman—or even every woman throughout her life. Life unfolds in seasons with its own gifts and limitations. If that is true, then the question before us is not whether women can “have it all,” but how our culture and our policies can better honor those seasons instead of working against them.
