This Wednesday at 2:00 p.m., Nile Gardiner, director of The Heritage Foundation's Margaret Thatcher Center for Freedom, and former aide to Lady Thatcher, will testify before the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Europe, Eurasia, and Emerging Threats about the current state of Brexit negotiations and the importance of a successful Brexit to the U.S.-U.K. Special Relationship.

The British government team, led by Brexit Secretary David Davis, are presently negotiating a post-Brexit arrangement with the 27 other members of the European Union, and while the United States is not party to the negotiations between the European Union and the United Kingdom, it does have a major strategic interest in the long-term success of Brexit, as well as in an enduring transatlantic alliance, which has remained the foundation of post-war U.S. global leadership.

 

It is in America’s interests to have a robust, powerful Special Relationship with Great Britain, one that will only be enhanced with the UK outside of the European Union. A strong independent Britain will be a better ally than one subsumed into an increasingly federal Europe.
