As Vice President of Finance and Accounting, and Treasurer, John P. Backiel is responsible for all aspects of The Heritage Foundation’s finance and accounting team, among them the annual budget, audit, tax filings, and investment policy oversight.

Backiel’s duties also include financial transparency, internal controls, financial reporting, and strategic thinking.

Before joining Heritage in 2012, Backiel held positions in private and public accounting, as well as financial advising. 

He holds a master’s degree in Financial Planning from Bentley University in Waltham, Massachusetts, and a bachelor of arts degree in Accounting and Business Administration from Gordon College in Wenham, Massachusetts. He is a certified public accountant.

Backiel, who grew up in Trumbull, Connecticut, currently resides with his family in Maryland.
