As vice president of finance and controller, John P. Backiel is responsible for all aspects of The Heritage Foundation’s finance and accounting team, among them the annual budget, audit, tax filings, and investment policy oversight.
Backiel’s duties also include financial transparency, internal controls, financial reporting, and strategic thinking.
Before joining Heritage in October 2012, Backiel was chief financial officer at one of New England’s largest chauffeured transportation companies. Before that, he spent six years in public accounting and financial advising.
He holds a master’s degree in financial planning from Bentley University in Waltham, Mass., and a bachelor of arts degree in accounting and business administration from Gordon College in Wenham, Mass. He is a certified public accountant.
Backiel, who grew up in Trumbull, Conn., currently resides with his family in Maryland.
