We offer young conservatives from around the country Washington, DC’s best internship program. Through our Young Leaders Program Facebook Page and our weekly newsletter, young conservatives can interact with Heritage policy experts on their campuses. For those visiting Washington, the Young Leaders Program will host a briefing about Heritage and policy issues.
The Young Leaders Program is a 12-15 week internship program that provides a full educational program while at The Heritage Foundation. Working up to 37.5 hours, an intern has the opportunity to learn from experts in a variety of fields by way of policy briefings, in-house mentorship, accountability of work, and a First Principles Series. An internship in the President’s Office is unlike any in the building, as the intern works directly with the President and sees the operations of Heritage from the top level. It is a generalist position as the President’s office does not specialize in any one specific policy area. The President’s Office intern provides direct operational and administrative support to the President and his executive staff. Key responsibilities include: drafting and editing correspondence, providing budget support, crafting comprehensive travel and scheduling documents, and compiling background and biography information for the President’s meetings.
Office of the Founder
The Founder’s Office intern provides direct operational and administrative support to the Founder and his personal staff for the purpose of increasing the effectiveness of the Foundation. This internship is unlike other in the building as the intern works directly with the Founder and sees the operations of Heritage from a unique level. It is a generalist position as our office does not specialize in any one specific policy area. This job is perfect for someone who wants to get a broad understanding of the political climate in Washington by learning about many different issues directly from a man who has spent over 40 years affecting politics in Washington. The work load fluctuates depending on the Founder’s schedule and needs.

The Heritage Foundation’s Events Team includes the Special Events and Conference Services departments. The Special Events side handles all external events throughout the country to include our annual productions, like the Annual Leadership Conference, Resource Bank Meeting, and President’s Club Meeting; as well as regional donor breakfasts, luncheons, and receptions. The Events intern provides administrative and operational support to the Special Events department. Conference Services is responsible for over 100 weekly meetings and events that take place within the Heritage buildings. The Events intern will assist Conference Services regularly coordinating catering orders, room reservations, and handling other administrative tasks. Previous event experience is preferred, but not necessary. The ideal Events intern will have the ability to make decisive decisions, prioritize responsibilities, and take initiative with assigned projects.
Finance and Accounting
The Finance and Accounting intern participates in all of YLP’s program offerings. While the daily work of most interns consists of policy research, the Finance & Accounting intern has the unique opportunity to gain broad exposure to many aspects of Heritage’s financial and accounting operations. Responsibilities will include, developing presentations, compiling documents during the annual audit, assisting in building financial models, performing GAAP research, among other projects. The Finance & Accounting intern gains valuable experience in the context of supporting the most influential conservative think tank in the country.
*Finance and Accounting is only available in the summer semester.
The Information Technology department deals directly with Heritage’s backend systems, supporting all Foundation staff in their roles. As an intern, one would have an opportunity to interact with and support all Heritage staff. Interns will be working with systems such as ATLAS, Heritage’s Constituent Relationship Management database that manages and analyzes the interactions with current and future constituents. As an intern, one would aid the team in managing the security roles of employee and vendor accounts, assign and resolve tickets submitted by employees regarding questions and processes, and assist with trainings of different functions crucial to day-to-day operation. Other tasks include but are not limited to creating/reviewing user documentation for various procedures to ensure uniform data entry, importing weekly email appends for online membership, and working closely with the CRM Manager on additional projects. Database experience is preferred but not required. Individual should be detail-oriented, organized, able to multi-task, interested in problem solving and communicate effectively.
The Workplace Solutions Department manages the facilities and general building operations for The Heritage Foundation. The Workplace Solutions Department advances Heritage’s mission by delivering a first-rate workplace and exceptional customer experiences. This team strives to maintain a welcome and safe work environment; and is crucial in the management of Heritage’s property and long-term development. The Workplace Solutions Intern assists with office space coordination, works directly with external vendors to source supplies and equipment, and researches information for financial and project reporting. The Workplace Solutions Intern is a trusted member of the department and is expected to display an excellent customer service mentality and a whatever-it-takes attitude at all times.
The Creative Department is The Heritage Foundation's in-house graphic design shop—handling the design, layout, and production of creative concepts for print and digital products including invitations, books, social media graphics, advertising campaigns, video and other collateral that advances organizational goals. Under the supervision of the Art Director, the intern will collaborate with the Creative team and across the organization to create brand appropriate design solutions that resonate with defined audiences. The intern will be involved in the entire design process from conceptualization of a design idea through publication.
Communications: Digital Strategy
The Digital Strategy team is responsible for the creation and maintenance of all of The Heritage Foundation’s web properties, including Heritage.org and DailySignal.com. The Digital Strategy interns work includes, but is not limited to: Assisting in production of live videos, i.e. brainstorming ideas, gathering information, and assisting on set. Drafting social media posts and creating content for Instagram stories. Uploading and making minor corrections to existing web pages using the content management system. Assisting with quality review and testing of new web products. Reporting on our web metrics, as well as assisting in our Search Engine Optimization efforts and web analytics.
The Digital Strategy team is responsible for the creation and maintenance of all of The Heritage Foundation’s web properties including Heritage.org and DailySignal.com. The Digital Strategy Marketing interns work includes, but is not limited to: Assisting with web Marketing projects; Digital publishing consisting of posting content and making minor changes/corrections to existing web pages and sites by using content management systems; Assisting with team projects including loading content for new sites as well as for redesigned digital properties; Assisting with quality review and testing of new web products and pages as well as creating test plans for product launches; Reporting on our web metrics, assisting in our Search Engine Optimization efforts and web analytics.
Communications: Media Relations
The Heritage Foundation Media Relations Department is responsible for promoting Heritage’s message across key media outlets - radio, television, print, and online news. Interns play an important role in the daily operations of the department through responsibilities that include answering and fielding requests from the media hotline, compiling a daily report of Heritage quotes and mentions from major media outlets, pulling press lists, and working with staff to craft media pitches promoting Heritage experts or products on the top issues of the day. This position requires an interest in the news cycle, demonstrated good judgment, attention to detail, and strong writing skills.
The Heritage Foundation’s Publishing team strives to win the war of ideas by building industry-leading, innovative owned-media platforms and digital assets that reach influential audiences. We do this by producing insightful and compelling content on Heritage.org, The Daily Signal, The Insider magazine, and our social media channels. Interns will be responsible for reporting and researching policy issues, updating our websites, writing Daily Signal articles, and creating video scripts. Prior journalism experience is preferred as well as the technical ability to film and edit video. Knowledge of AP Style, Drupal and WordPress is a plus. This is a hands-on job and requires the ability to stay organized and work under pressure. It is a great learning experience with lots of practical experience.
Communications: The Daily Signal
The Daily Signal is the multimedia news organization of The Heritage Foundation. Reporting interns will be part of the news team and be responsible for gathering news, reporting and writing articles, as well as writing and creating social media videos. Strong writing skills are required, and prior journalism experience is preferred. The reporting intern should be prepared to write one or two stories per day, select photos to accompany his or her stories and submit those stories in a timely manner. Interns are expected to cover events in Washington, D.C., including congressional hearings and rallies or protests. Interns will also have opportunities to create photo or multimedia essays on current events. Assignments are pitched by interns and assigned by editors. Knowledge of AP Style and WordPress is a plus.
Communications: Video Production
The video production intern will produce insightful and compelling content for The Heritage Foundation and The Daily Signal, Heritage’s multimedia news organization. This involves technical ability to film, edit, and produce timely video content relevant and appealing to a diverse audience. Interns will be responsible to help organize, maintain, and utilize video production equipment in the filming of interviews and live-video projects at Heritage and around Washington, D.C. Interns will also be trained to independently conduct interviews, produce original video content for The Daily Signal, and assist behind-the-scenes in the production of live broadcasts of events, interviews, and commentaries. This is a hands-on job and requires the ability to stay organized, learn quickly, and work under pressure.
Marketing: Campaigns, Product Development and Promotion, Market Research, Audience Building
The Marketing department plans and implements marketing campaigns that promote conservative policy solutions and build awareness of The Heritage Foundation, runs a comprehensive market research program that informs organizational strategy and innovation, coordinates with other departments to produce marketing materials that advance the organization’s goals, and builds audiences for online products. As part of the marketing term, interns will have the opportunity to help with primary market research studies, marketing campaigns, content creation, and Heritage’s branded apparel shop. Marketing interns have an opportunity to become familiar with a wide variety of public policy issues, marketing and communications, and to see how all aspects of Heritage work together to promote and support conservative policies.
Development: Donor Relations
The donor relations intern assists the donor relations specialist team in making sure that our 18 nationwide fundraisers have all of the resources that they need while visiting donors on the road. Tasks surrounding this effort may include special mailings, providing donor information from the Heritage database, making donor calls to follow-up on event invitations and solicitor visits, etc. Weekly, the intern will run the call report, which compiles all reports on donor visits for that particular week. Monthly, the intern will help with income tracking, comparing the gifts in the database to those reported on the daily income email. Other tasks for the intern include answering the membership line and data entry. In addition to these responsibilities, the intern will participate in a busy calendar of activities set up by the Heritage Young Leaders Program and regularly meet with a mentor of their choice from within the organization.
Development: Donor Relations Advancement
The Donor Relations Advancement team produces written materials to solicit gifts from major donors and to follow up on those gifts through stewardship reports and other forms of special recognition. As part of the Development Office, the DRA team produces written materials that aim to secure budgeted income for both The Heritage Foundation and Heritage Action for America. Your responsibilities as the DRA intern will include establishing and maintaining department files and database records; preparing written materials to be mailed to donors; conducting accurate and timely research concerning donor, foundation, and corporation history, interests and donor requirements; and assisting with recording and tracking proposal and reporting deadlines.
Development: Gift Planning
The Heritage Legacy Society intern helps the Development office generate, steward and track contributions and planned gift commitments for The Heritage Foundation in a manner that builds long-term relationships with the donors so that commitments and gifts will continue in the future. To this end, the Heritage Legacy Society intern communicates with Heritage members via phone, e-mail and mail and assists with special projects as needed.
Development: Membership Programs
The Membership Intern helps the Development Office generate contributions from current and prospective donors each year to meet annual budget requirements while cultivating strong long-term relationships with those donors. Interns will not only serve donors through basic membership needs and inquiries, but they will communicate via phone, email, and events, to promote Heritage policy with members throughout the country.
Development: Online Membership Programs
The membership interns help the Development Office generate contributions from current and prospective donors each year that meet annual budget requirements and do this in a manner that builds long-term relationships with donors so they will continue their support in future years. By providing excellent customer service, the online membership intern supports the Development Department’s mission statement that “people give to people – fundraising is not about programs, it’s about relationships.” The face of The Heritage Foundation, membership interns are the bridge between our members and what goes on inside Heritage. Specific job duties include managing the membership inbox, creating new response templates as necessary, and assisting with online marketing to members and potential members by providing weekly content for our Member’s website: www.myheritage.org. The Online Membership intern engages in a wide variety of other projects related to online member communications. Membership interns answer the Membership Line in a professional and knowledgeable manner and follow-up on all subsequent donor requests, help facilitate monthly member teleconferences, and provide tours to Heritage visitors. Throughout the course of the internship, interns will gain valuable experience, learning and refining such transferrable skills as fundraising, sales and marketing, customer service, and database management.
Domestic Policy Studies: Health Policy Studies
The Domestic Policy Studies, Center for Health Policy Studies intern, focuses on advancing efforts to transform the health care system so that individuals own and control their insurance policies and the flow of dollars in the health care system. The Health Policy intern compiles reliable research on various aspects on health policy and reform. The intern attends, takes notes, and summarizes congressional hearings, conferences, and other events on these topics.
Domestic Policy Studies: Welfare Policy Studies
The Domestic Policy Studies, Welfare Policy Studies intern, focuses on research to reduce welfare dependence and decrease poverty through increased self-support. The Welfare Policy intern assists with research projects as assigned by Senior Fellow and Policy Analyst for welfare studies; the intern attends, takes note, and summarizes congressional hearings, conferences, and other events on topics related to welfare policy.
Education Policy Studies
The Education Policy Studies department studies federal and state education issues, focusing on two critical areas of education policy: reducing the federal role in education and empowering families with school choice. Education policy interns compile reliable research on education policy. Education policy interns attend, take notes, and summarize congressional hearings, conferences, and other events on these specific topics. Education policy interns are responsible for compiling daily news articles and on occasion will be asked to draft blogs.
The DeVos Center for Religion and Civil Society
The DeVos Center for Religion and Civil Society oversees research in areas that determine the character of our culture: marriage, family, religion, and civil society. Marriage, Family and Welfare Policy interns compile reliable research on a particular issue, such as family, welfare and poverty, religion and civil society. The intern attends, takes notes, and summarizes congressional hearings, conferences, and other events on these specific topics.
Allison Center for Foreign Policy: Africa and Middle East
The Kathryn and Shelby Cullom Davis Institute for National Security and Foreign Policy at The Heritage Foundation conducts research and publishes papers which concern these topics. The Africa and Middle East Policy intern reports directly to the Policy Analyst for Africa and the Middle East, at whose direction the intern conducts research primarily on Africa policy issues including terrorism, democracy and governance, refugees, and foreign aid and development. The intern may be assigned to take notes at congressional hearings, conferences, and other events, assist with the drafting of blog posts or other written products, occasionally help prepare and execute events hosted by the Policy Analyst for Africa and the Middle East, and perform any other duties necessary to assist the Policy Analyst in the course of his work.
Allison Center for Foreign Policy: Comprehensive
The Foreign Policy department conducts research and publishes papers on a wide variety of international political, economic, security, and defense issues. Because its primary audience is the U.S. Congress, it convenes working groups; organizes lectures, debates, and luncheons; and conducts briefings on timely foreign policy, homeland security, and defense issues for members of Congress and their staffs. The Comprehensive Foreign Policy intern compiles reliable research on a variety of United States Foreign Policy issues. In addition, the intern attends, takes notes, and summarizes congressional hearings, conferences, and other events on these topics.
Allison Center for Foreign Policy: Homeland and Cyber Security
The terrorist attacks of September 11 struck at the very heart of the American homeland, after which the United States entered a new form of total war in the age of terrorism. America’s security has become a top priority of government at every level. Heritage’s research has become a vital resource for finding solutions that will help make government action most effective. The Homeland Security Foreign Policy intern compiles reliable research on a variety of homeland defense and security issues. The intern attends, takes notes, and summarizes congressional hearings, conferences, and other events on these topics. Responsibilities also include monitoring the Department of Homeland Security and Congress’ response to the changing threats facing America.
Allison Center for Foreign Policy: Latin America
The Kathryn and Shelby Cullom Davis Institute for National Security and Foreign Policy at The Heritage Foundation conducts research and publishes papers which concern these topics. The Latin America intern reports directly to the Policy Analyst for Latin America. At their direction, the intern will conduct research primarily on Latin America policy issues including correcting the Obama Administration’s Cuba policy, security and development in Central America, the crisis in Venezuela, the implementation of the Colombian peace process, the weakening of democracy and governance in the hemisphere, as well as other issues as they may arise. The intern will be assigned to take notes at congressional hearings, conferences and other events. They will also be asked for support in drafting op-ed’s and written products as well supporting the events and meetings.
Allison Center for Foreign Policy: Middle East
The Middle East has become perhaps the most crucial regional arena for American foreign policy in the coming years, involving the future of Iraq, the war against terrorism, the Arab-Israeli conflict, and international energy security. The Foreign Policy and Defense studies at The Heritage Foundation conducts research and publishes papers which concern these topics. The Middle Eastern Foreign Policy intern compiles reliable research on a variety of Middle Eastern political, economic, security issues, and monitoring and analyzing the progress of the War on Terrorism. The intern attends, takes notes, and summarizes congressional hearings, conferences, and other events on these topics.
Allison Center for Foreign Policy: National Security
America must be capable of proactively protecting the nation and its citizens. Our armed forces must be ready to act anywhere in the world where vital national interests are threatened. This can be achieved by providing the military with the resources it needs to keep Americans safe and maintain freedom. The defense and security studies position at The Heritage Foundation conducts research and publishes papers which concern these topics. The National Security intern compiles reliable research on a variety of defense issues, primarily on issues involving military readiness, defense budget, and elements of homeland security. The intern attends, takes notes, and summarizes congressional hearings, conferences, and other events on these topics. Responsibilities also include monitoring defense modernization.
Center for National Defense: Defense Budget
Americans must be capable of proactively protecting the nation and its citizens. Our armed forces must be ready to act anywhere in the world where vital national interests are threatened. This can be achieved by giving the military the resources it needs to keep us safe and maintain freedom. The Defense department at The Heritage Foundation conducts research and publishes papers which concern these topics. The Defense Budget Foreign Policy intern compiles reliable research on a variety of defense issues, primarily on issues involving defense budget, national security strategy, defense modernization programs, and Congressional budget legislation. The intern attends, takes notes, and summarizes congressional hearings, conferences, and other events on these topics.
Center for National Defense: Defense Studies
The United States has a Constitutional responsibility to provide for the common defense. The Heritage Foundation supports the efforts to fulfill this responsibility through its advocacy both for a more robust Department of Defense as well as the U.S. Coast Guard. Heritage also argues for a stronger national defense each year through the Index of U.S. Military Strength. The Defense department at The Heritage Foundation conducts research and publishes papers which concern these topics. The National Security intern compiles reliable research on a variety of security issues, primarily involving military force sizing and capabilities, national security strategy, defense modernization programs, and Coast Guard policy. The intern attends, takes notes, and summarizes congressional hearings, conferences, and other events on these topics.
Center for National Defense: Strategic Studies
The United States must maintain a strong, safe, secure, and effective nuclear weapons deterrent. The task is of a growing importance in a world of multiple nuclear weapon powers hostile to the United States and its allies. Americans, forward deployed troops, and allies need to be protected from ballistic missile attacks of different types and ranges. The Defense department at The Heritage Foundation conducts research and publishes papers which concern these topics. The Strategic Studies Foreign Policy intern compiles reliable research on a variety of defense issues, primarily on issues involving defense budget, national security strategy, defense modernization programs, and Congressional budget legislation. The intern attends, takes notes, and summarizes congressional hearings, conferences, and other events on these topics.
Davis Institute: Asian Studies Center
The Asia-Pacific region is one of the most vital focus areas for U.S. political, economic, and security policy. The Asian Studies Center at The Heritage Foundation conducts research, publishes papers, and hosts public programs on a broad range of Asia-oriented issues. The Asian Studies intern compiles reliable research; attends and take notes at congressional hearings, conferences, and other events; writes short information papers and summaries; and provides general administrative support to the work of the Center.
Center for Data Analysis
The Center for Data Analysis (CDA) undertakes data-driven research of economic policy issues using macro- and micro- economic models, statistical software, and other tools to empirically analyze government policies. As the numbers department, CDA is central to domestic policy research at The Heritage Foundation covering a wide range of issues, including the state of the economy, healthcare, regulation, and energy/environment. CDA interns help construct and analyze data, prepare research reports, and write blogs highlighting CDA findings. This is a good department for interns with strong economics or math backgrounds, especially ones seeking to continue their studies in professional degrees that require quantitative research experience.
Center for Free Markets & Regulatory Reform: Energy & Environment
Heritage's energy team focuses on opening access to America's energy resources, reducing the regulatory burden on energy industries, addressing climate science and climate regulations, and eliminating government cronyism of all forms to make the energy economy a more market oriented one. We advance those goals through papers, opinion editorials and blogs, meetings with Members of Congress and staff on Capitol Hill, outreach and coordination with like-minded organizations, public events and working groups, speeches and media appearances. The intern will experience researching for longer papers as well as fast-paced research for quick turnarounds for a blog or short paper. He or she will have the opportunity to attend conferences and hearings, as well as write on a wide variety of energy topics.
Center for Free Markets & Regulatory Reform: Index of Economic Freedom
The Center for Free Markets and Regulatory Reform produces the annual Index of Economic Freedom. For over two decades, the Index has measured the impact of liberty and free markets around the globe. Through comprehensive analysis of diverse economies ranging from Hong Kong to North Korea, the Index provides compelling evidence that freer economies are richer, cleaner, and healthier; less prone to violence; and more politically stable. In every region of the world, opportunities for innovation, progress and human development are provided more easily when governments respect and promote the principles of economic freedom. The intern will assist in the production of Index through data-collection and tracking of government reforms around the word. He or she will also have the opportunity to assist analysts with research projects, co-author blogs on pertinent subjects, and attend lectures and hearings.
Center for Free Markets & Regulatory Reform: Regulation & Free Markets
Entrepreneurialism is a fundamental expression of the human spirit, but the unparalleled expansion of the administrative state is crushing that spirit, along with productivity, and economic growth. Heritage is a leader in tracking the number and cost of federal regulations, and advocating for reforms that would impose accountability on Congress and rein in the regulatory overreach of the executive branch. The intern will be responsible for updating Heritage’s regulatory database, composing a daily round-up of regulatory news, and researching rules affecting the environment, finance sector, telecommunications and energy. Past interns have also published articles on regulatory issues for the Daily Signal. He or she will also attend congressional hearings, and policy lectures.
Roe Institute: Budget, Spending, and Retirement Security
Entitlement programs—Social Security, Medicaid and Medicare—are the main drivers of federal spending and debt. Because entitlement spending runs on auto-pilot with automatic increases locked in by each program's governing laws, they present a major threat to limited government. Core federal government priorities, such as defense or national security, must compete for an increasingly smaller share of remaining budget resources. The national debt continues rising, fueled by over-spending in Washington, raising both economic and moral concerns. Heritage research in these areas seeks to show Americans the full picture of the federal budget to build pressure for spending control in Washington. Entitlement reform is a key priority to protect Americans against poverty without burdening younger generations with higher taxes and slow growth, and to enable Americans to control more of their health care and retirement decisions and dollars. The intern will experience researching for longer papers as well as fast-paced research for quick turnarounds for a blog or short paper. He or she will have the opportunity to attend conferences and hearings, and engage in data analysis and research on a wide variety of budget topics.
Roe Institute: Monetary Policy
The Federal Reserve’s expansive policies enable the federal government’s deficit spending, thus further jeopardizing future economic prosperity. The conventional wisdom, even among most economists, is that the Federal Reserve is necessary for the economy to function properly. Heritage Research aims to question this proposition and study the effectiveness of monetary policy. The intern will assist with research including, but not limited to, analyzing data regarding the Federal Reserve’s regulatory and monetary policies. This is a good position for interns with a strong analytical and statistics background, especially those who also have a background in finance and/or economics and who wish to continue their studies in a graduate program.
Roe Institute: Project for Economic Growth
Economic growth is paramount for the USA to continue to be that “shining city on a hill” that Reagan believed in. Through free market principles, limiting government intervention and allowing individuals to make decisions that work best for themselves and their families, we can spur tremendous, sustainable growth. The Project for Economic growth was developed to be the voice of those who produce and have the dream of growing their enterprise. The intern will assist the director and research associate with research including, but not limited to, analyzing data for job growth, GDP growth, energy, tax, migration patterns within the US, and much more. This is a good position for interns with a strong analytical and statistics background, capable of comparing various data sets, and forming creative charts and graphs in Excel. Those who have a background in finance and/or economics and who wish to continue their studies in a graduate program would also fit well in this internship.
Roe Institute: Taxes, Capital Markets, and Entrepreneurship
Burdensome regulations hinder economic growth, and the Federal Reserve’s expansive policies enable expansive deficit spending, thus further jeopardizing future economic prosperity. There must be fundamental tax reform to foster prosperity and fairness, improving the legal and regulatory environment for entrepreneurs seeking to raise capital to launch and grow their businesses. The intern will assist with research into the nature of and impediments to entrepreneurship and economic growth, including, but not limited to, the Federal Reserve’s regulatory and monetary policies.
Center for Principles and Politics
The B. Kenneth Simon Center for Principles and Politics produces papers and sponsors various seminars and lectures with the objective of teaching up-and-coming policymakers about the intellectual underpinnings of American government, with a focus on; the principles of the American Founding and the U.S. Constitution, the fundamentals of economic liberty, and the basics of conservative thought and public policy. The purpose of these activities is to promote the ideas and policies involved in returning the United States to a condition of principled constitutional government. The Center for Principles and Politics intern helps our analysts with their research needs by performing internet-based and historical research. Additional responsibilities include proofing and editing papers and book projects.
Edwin Meese III Center for Legal & Judicial Studies
The Meese Center promotes appropriate legal and judicial reform and educates government officials, the media, and the public about the U.S. Constitution, statutes, and legal principles. Interns are paired up with one of our legal scholars and produce short- and long-term research and writing projects. Areas of research include civil justice and regulatory reform, overcriminalization, equal protection, voting and election law, religious liberty, antitrust, role of the courts, and judicial issues. Additional responsibilities include attending meetings and congressional hearings, assisting with various lectures and conferences, and general office work as requested.
Building the conservative movement is the main function of The Heritage Foundation’s Coalition Relations department, a communications link and information clearinghouse for 430 policy organizations and more than 2,700 policy experts around the world. Primary activities include publishing The Insider magazine and the Policy Experts guide, hosting regular policy working groups and strategy forums, organizing conferences and meetings with conservative leaders and policy experts including the annual Resource Bank meeting, and handling referrals concerning conservative groups and experts. The Coalition Relations intern will assist in coordinating these meetings, taking notes, updating departmental databases
The External Relations department handles Heritage’s strategic outreach and communications to business and conservative leaders, to other policy organizations, federal officials, and international parliamentarians. The External Relations intern provides research and administrative support by completing research projects, drafting speeches, and attending and taking notes at various meetings.
The Truluck Center helps to lead and grow Heritage and the Conservative Movement through talent identification, development, and placement. We work with our contacts in the Administration, on the Hill, and in other non-profits to develop and place conservatives in key jobs. We train conservatives at all career levels in leadership, management, and in-demand skills to make Heritage and the Movement more effective and influential. As an intern in our department, you will assist Heritage’s ongoing recruitment efforts to build and lead the Conservative Movement. Since we are responsible for talent placement throughout the Movement in organizations, the Hill, and the Administration, you’ll represent us at local career fairs to promote our Job Bank. You will also help schedule, plan, and execute training and other special events for Heritage staff and our coalition partners. As a member of our close-knit team, you’ll join us in ensuring that Heritage recruits and trains the Movement’s finest talent.
Policy Services and Outreach: Capitol Hill Outreach
Policy Services is Congress’ link to the policy recommendations, in-depth analyses, and conservative ideas expressed in Heritage’s articles, publications, lectures and other products. Policy Services staff is available to help members of Congress prepare for congressional hearings by identifying Heritage experts who will provide valuable insight on foreign, domestic and economic policy issues. Heritage regularly hosts Hill briefings, events and fellowships on the legislation of the day and latest Heritage research, serving as a go-to resource for Congressional staffers. The department intern tracks legislation and conducts research, maintains contact databases and assists with the coordination of Hill briefings and events. Previous experience on the Hill or in research is not necessary for this position. An interest to learn from a fast-paced and innovative environment is desired for interested applicants.
Young Leaders Program
The Young Leaders Program promotes the mission of The Heritage Foundation to the next generation by developing and implementing outreach to younger audiences. We offer young conservatives from around the country Washington, DC’s best internship program. Through our Young Leaders Program Facebook Page and our quarterly newsletter, young conservatives can connect with Heritage and other opportunities in the movement. For those visiting Washington, the Young Leaders Program offers briefings to learn about the work of The Heritage Foundation. Interns in the Young Leaders Program help to execute these various programs and outreach efforts. The intern would assist with other needs of the Young Leaders Program including recruitment, campus outreach, and alumni engagement.
Heritage Action for America
Interns at Heritage Action for America will have the opportunity to work for the grassroots and lobbying sister organization of The Heritage Foundation. Interns at HAFA are given the chance to assist in each department such as our Grassroots, Government Relations, and Digital Communications teams. Daily tasks include everything from researching legislation to recruiting activists to drafting tweets. Additionally, HAFA interns play a critical role in assisting with our customer service protocols through engaging with Heritage Action members via phone and email. This is a great opportunity for any intern aspiring to work on campaigns or Capitol Hill.
