Mayor Baker isn’t just being humble. He’s a social and economic conservative. Conservatives generally aren’t known for leading with an antipoverty, urban renewal agenda.

From Britain to U.S., Frank Talk Needed on Absent Fathers

Britain is soul-searching after raging youth mobs, some among them not yet teens, left five people dead and property damages estimated at $325 million in five nights of anarchy.

'Josephs' Are Poised to Restore America

Convicts, gang bangers, addicts and dropouts from across the country descended on Denver the other day.

Istook842 Marriage and Children

Istook

Bend the Baby Curve Like Beckham

On most days, people around the world admire the footprints of David Beckham. In response, some have argued that certain threats to religious freedom discussed in this context have more to do with nondiscrimination laws than with the legal status of same-sex marriage. This argument reflects certain realities. Conflicts between same-sex marriage and religious freedom will often involve some type of previously adopted nondiscrimination law or policy, and nondiscrimination laws can impose burdens on religious freedom even in jurisdictions that do not legally recognize homosexual unions as marriages. But neither point diminishes the threat that same-sex marriage poses to religious freedom. Same-sex marriage is likely to trigger a number of conflicts between nondiscrimination laws and religious freedom that otherwise would not exist, and threats to religious freedom are no less troubling because they involve nondiscrimination laws and same-sex marriage, not just same-sex marriage.

Failing the Character Test

Summer vacation is anything but relaxing for those embroiled in the most extensive cheating scandal in the history of American public education.

America’s Marriage Debate Depends on Civil Society

As recent events in New York show, the marriage debate in America takes place amid serious political and legal fault lines. The nation’s out-of-wedlock birth rate is more than 50 percent higher for all women of childbearing age than it was for the black American subset that so troubled the late Pat Moynihan when he wrote his study for the Labor Department in the 1960s.
