Heritage Foundation senior fellow Robert Moffit says the 2016 Medicare Trustees Report, which was released today, paints a troubling fiscal picture that could leave taxpayers with big debt and burdens over the long term.
"Medicare's fiscal challenge is based on the dramatic growth in Medicare spending--which will grow faster than workers' wages and the general economy--that will consume greater shares of the federal budget, crowd out other budget priorities, and take up larger shares of the economy."
He urged lawmakers to address the major financial problems with Medicare's Hospital Trust Fund and explosive overall spending sooner rather than later to minimize the impact on beneficiaries, health care providers, and taxpayers.
