As the U.S. State Department issues a summer travel alert for European travel, many Americans are concerned about terrorist threats.
Robin Simcox, The Heritage Foundation’s Margaret Thatcher Fellow, warns that France must continue to disrupt terror plots in the planning stages before they come to fruition.
“The U.S. State Department is correct in its assessment. The terror threat remains severe in Europe – particularly in France.” Simcox says. “As a result, the French government is taking proper action, pouring massive resources into security for the European Championships and at the Tour de France. The huge crowds drawn to these events make a tempting target for twisted groups such as ISIS.”
“Any aspiring jihadist targeting these sporting events will find them extremely heavily guarded. Success in the effort to stop terrorist activities will rely largely on intelligence sharing of allies including the United States.”
