It is a grave moral failing of our age that the full extent of communism’s crimes and victims remains dimly understood. How many know there have been more than 100 million victims of communism – a death toll surpassing that of all the wars in the 20th Century combined? How many are aware that a fifth of the world’s population still lives, and not by their choice, under communism?

To serve as a permanent reminder of communism’s inhumanity to man, an international Memorial to the victims of communism will be built on Capitol Hill – just four blocks from the U.S. Capitol. Ground-breaking is scheduled for September, dedication in June 2007, on the 20th anniversary of President Reagan’s historic address at the Brandenburg Gate, when he declared, “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!”

In addition, organizations such as the Laogai Foundation, the Center for a Free Cuba, and the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation continue to educate the public about the continuing communist oppression and violation of human rights in China, Cuba, North Korea, Vietnam, and Laos. The Heritage Foundation has brought together an outstanding panel of experts to discuss the critical question, “Is Communism Dead?”
