Immediately prior to and in conjunction with the “Taking Care of Our Troops” program also set for May 24, The Heritage Foundation will host a special briefing on its newly updated report on U.S. troop deployments. In late 2004, the first comprehensive time series data on U.S. troop deployments by year and country, from 1950 to 2003, was published. Data for both 2004 and 2005 have now been incorporated into this study.

Much of the controversy and debate about the duration of U.S. troop deployments has been carried on in a fact-free vacuum, lacking context of American troops’ traditional footprint around the globe for the last half century. Are too many or too few soldiers in Iraq? What is the nature of America’s geopolitical ambitions? What impact does our widespread deployment have on the families of soldiers? Join us as these and other concerns about the stationing of our servicemen are addressed by our panelists.
