Every day it becomes more apparent that the current Medicaid program is unfit to meet the needs of those it was designed to assist. Its fiscal and structural problems are inflicting unsustainable financial burdens on state governments. Its failures to adequately address core problems within the system have forced many states to consider some difficult austere policy options or go hat-in-hand to Congress. The State of South Carolina, however, is courageously pursuing a different approach – incorporating greater flexibility, individual control, and personal responsibility – to achieve genuine reforms in this government program. Join us as the Governor of South Carolina, Mark Sanford, discusses the challenges Medicaid is posing for our states, his "Medicaid Choice" proposal to fundamentally transform the Medicaid system in South Carolina, and the example it may offer other states seeking to strengthen the long-term fiscal health of Medicaid and the physical health of their citizens.
