Out of Many One: E Pluribus Unum - Putting American History and Civics Back in Our Classrooms

Recorded on March 14, 2003

Location:
The Heritage Foundation's Van Andel Center

At a time when our principles and way of life are being attacked, there is growing interest in the intersection of two urgent concerns that will determine our country's future: the education of our children and the principles that unite us as Americans. Several studies in recent years have shown a disturbing decline in knowledge of American history and civics among grade school and high school students. An important reason for this decline is that the little history that is being taught in America's schools has been watered down, and civics has largely been dropped from the curriculum entirely. Former Secretary of Education and Senator Lamar Alexander will discuss the importance of bringing these critical principles back into the classroom - principles that will bring clarity back into our country's purpose.
