Islam and the West: How Europe Should Tackle Islamic Extremism

Recorded on June 19, 2007

Location: The Heritage Foundation's Lehrman Auditorium

Despite the terrorist attacks on New York, Washington, Madrid and London, some European political elites continue to appease Islamic extremists despite the fact that major European cities have become hubs of the global Islamic jihad.  Western leaders, however, increasingly acknowledge that multiculturalism has failed as a public policy.  Multiculturalism has resulted in the fragmentation of society, with large minority communities isolated in ethnic ghettos, with nation-states afraid to promote the basic values of liberal democracy.  Is it now time for European countries to replace the banner of cultural diversity with a new sense of national identity?

Join our panel as they look at how the West, and Europe in particular, can tackle Islamic extremism and reassert the values of democracy, rule of law, tolerance and integration for all.
