A Bad Day for Religious Freedom

Recorded on August 1, 2012

Today another part of Obamacare kicks in—employer-based insurance must cover contraception and even abortion-inducing drugs. Or face fines that can total millions of dollars for each employer.

Dozens of lawsuits are pending from religious institutions, objecting that this violates core parts of their faith, and in the case of Catholics a religious opposition to birth control.

One small business received a protective order, to excuse them from complying, at least for now. But larger institutions, like the University of Notre Dame, are still waiting for courts to rule.

Most churches have ministries. They run schools, hospitals, adoption centers, homeless shelters. President Obama says those do not deserve First Amendment protection, that only the actual house of worship should qualify.

His narrow view is the source of the problem. This conflict never would have happened if the President were sensitive toward religious liberty.
