Bureaucracies That Govern Through Fear

"I'm from the government and I'm here to help you." That line is often included in lists of the biggest lies.

The release of a videotape of an EPA bureaucrat proves why almost nobody believes the government is really trying to help.

The official revealed that the EPA deliberately uses fear to force compliance with even the most unreasonable environmental requests. As that bureaucrat told his audience, if some are crucified—his words--then everyone else falls into line and hops to obey.

Creating a climate of fear is not how our government is supposed to work. But too often that's how agencies like the EPA impose their will. The costs are passed along to us consumers. Growth is impeded. And that kills jobs.

It would be nice if government really was trying to help us. But too often, instead it holds us back, and even punishes the innocent.
