President's Day 2012

Recorded on February 19, 2012

When I was growing up, most school kids learned that Abraham Lincoln was born February 12 and George Washington February 22.

But now does anyone know? Combining them into a President's Day holiday that always falls on a Monday makes our lives more regular and predictable, but now the history takes a backseat to the President's Day sales.

How many ads will feature little George with a hatchet and Honest Abe saying they cannot tell a lie: This is a great sale.

Once both of these men were honored as great examples of moral character and leadership. If you have children, today would be a fine time to take them aside and teach them about two great and upstanding Presidents. Great men who until recent years were honored as terrific role models, not as convenient salesmen to get you to go out and shop.
