Dependency Climbs

Before President Lyndon B. Johnson began the Great Society programs in the '60's, about one in every nine Americans depended on federal assistance to get by. Today, instead of one in nine, it's one in five.

Dependence on government rose 8 percent in 2010 alone. In the last ten years, it's grown by over 60 percent. This is explosive growth in dependence on government for housing, health care, welfare, food stamps, and retirement. It doesn't even count federal workers and contractors.

Yet as dependency grows, the number of taxpayers keeps shrinking. Now only half the country pays federal income tax and the other half does not.

Fewer pay for things while more and more get them. That's a formula for disaster. It's time for dramatic reform, or dramatic disaster. Check out some answers at savingthedream.org.
