Cut, Cap and Balance

Most Washington politicians won't talk specifics on how to get government under control.

So it's welcome when anybody provides more details. Over 100 Republican members have put a plan on the table, which they call Cut, Cap and Balance.

Cut means cut the deficit in half right now. That means reducing spending immediately by hundreds of billions of dollars.

Cap means cap total federal spending so it's no more than 18 percent of the Gross Domestic Product, making more spending cuts to reach this goal.

Balance means the long-term approach of balancing the budget with a constitutional requirement that also limits the amount of spending.

Cut, cap and balance. It's a good approach. The problem is that only a fourth of the House is proposing it—which means the other 3/4ths need to take a stand also. And so should the Senate.
