Year of the Underdog
Recorded on March 28, 2011
It's time for common sense; I'm Ernest Istook.
None of the top seeds have made it to the Final Four in men's college basketball.
The underdogs have defied all predictions, and that's refreshing to lots of sports fans.
So what if the trend carries over into politics? After all, President Obama's negative ratings outweigh his positive. Only 13% of Americans approve of the job that Congress is doing. And none of those hoping to unseat Obama have exciting levels of support either; most are in single digits in the polls.
Just like in basketball, conditions are ripe for underdog candidates. That's a good reason to pay close attention to the tea party movement, and the related efforts to re-elevate constitutional principles in government. It may be time for March Madness, but how can that compare to the anger that voters unleashed at the polls last November?
For common sense, from The Heritage Foundation, I'm Ernest Istook.
