Regulatory Headfake

Recorded on January 18, 2011

It's time for common sense; I'm Ernest Istook.

Washington politics isn't about doing things; it's about giving the appearance of doing things.

Federal regulations are a major reason why companies can't create jobs, so politicians want you to think they're cutting red tape rather than creating it. President Obama has announced an effort that sounds like it will reduce regulations. “Sounds like” is right.

But he's only starting a preliminary process to review regulations so that they might be reduced at a totally unknown date sometime in the future. Key words are preliminary, review, might, and sometime in the future.

Instead, why doesn't Obama reverse the $25-billion in new regulations that his Administration issued in 2010.

In typical Washington fashion, it's designed to make you think they're doing something, when actually they aren't—and often are doing the exact opposite.

For common sense, from The Heritage Foundation, I'm Ernest Istook.
