The Three Joint Communiqués, the Taiwan Relations Act, and the Six Assurances together established the historical framework for America’s engagement with Taiwan. However, it is equally well established that over the years each U.S. presidential administration has interpreted its limits and responsibilities differently. With a new President in Taiwan, and a new President in the United States, it is an important time to examine how U.S.-Taiwan relations can continue to develop within this framework, in new administrations as well as in a difficult Asian economic, political, and security environment.
