Reported Russian Violations of the Intermediate-Range Treaty: Next Steps

Co-hosted by the National Institute for Public Policy

The United States recently informed its North Atlantic Treaty Organization allies that Russia is potentially violating the 1987 Intermediate-Range Forces Treaty. For years, the Obama Administration appears to have left the issue unaddressed, all the while pursuing a “reset” consolatory policy with the Kremlin. Meanwhile the U.S. missile defense program continues to be scaled back and the nuclear triad keeps aging. Uncertainty regarding the Administration’s commitment to U.S. strategic forces and its expressed desire for further U.S. nuclear weapons reductions raise questions about the capability of the U.S. strategic posture to assure allies and deter potential adversaries. How should the U.S. respond to Russian violations? What are potential allied concerns? Join us as our guests discuss Russian Intermediate-Range Forces Treaty non-compliance, the actions the U.S. could take in response, and what this Russian behavior signals with regard to Russian intentions and the value of further U.S.-Russian arms control agreements.
