Union membership hit a 97 year low in 2012. Many workers no longer find unions relevant to their concerns in the workplace. Union organizers have in turn become increasingly aggressive. Congress rebuffed their attempts to eliminate the secret ballot in organizing elections. Now unions have turned to the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) and aggressive anti-business "corporate campaigns" to boost their ranks.
The NLRB, which by charter is supposed to remain neutral with respect to business vs. unions, has attempted to rewrite long-settled labor laws and introduce new regulations to favor unions. Corporate campaigns are designed to attack a business' reputation until it accepts union demands. The Service Employees International Union (SEIU) waged an extensive corporate campaign against Dave Bego's firm, Executive Management Services, Inc. Despite three years of attacks, he refused to surrender his employees' right to a secret ballot and won the battle. A feat few companies can claim.
David Bego will speak about the damage that corporate campaigns do to employers and employees, the harm the NLRB's proposals would cause, and how employers can fight back against brutal union tactics. Russ Brown of the Labor Relations Institute and Diana Furchtgott-Roth of the Manhattan Institute will comment on these issues.
