Among the unsettling shifts in the wake of 9/11 was the global attention paid to Islam. Here in the United States, we became divided between those who believed every Muslim was a potential threat and those who believed no Muslim could do wrong.
For conservative Wisconsin native and former U.S. Navy Lieutenant Commander Dr. M. Zuhdi Jasser, these radical times mean facing a new reality as a devout Muslim and a patriot – possibly even betraying his faith, by asking: “Can a good Muslim be a good American as well?” Dr. Jasser founded the American Islamic Forum for Democracy (AIFD) to instill in young American Muslims an appreciation for the positive impact that this nation’s ideals have had upon the world. He offers non-Muslims an understanding of the difference between Islam and Islamism, or political Islam, and how violence and extremism run counter to Islam’s true teachings. As he argues, until we acknowledge the threat of Islamism in all its forms, the majority of Americans recognize only the most obvious: terrorism.
In A Battle for the Soul of Islam, Dr. Jasser posits that virulent political Islamist movements betray both religious values and principles of modernity and universal equality and asserts that this is a Muslim problem that needs a Muslim solution.
M. Zuhdi Jasser, M.D. is the Founder and President of the American Islamic Forum for Democracy (AIFD). A devout Muslim, Dr. Jasser founded AIFD in the wake of the 9/11 attacks on the United States as an effort to provide an American Muslim voice advocating for the preservation of the founding principles of the United States Constitution, liberty and freedom, through the separation of mosque and state. Dr. Jasser is a first generation American Muslim whose parents fled the oppressive Baath regime of Syria in the mid-1960’s for American freedom. He is leading the fight to shake the hold that the Muslim Brotherhood and their network of American Islamist organizations and mosques seek to exert on organized Islam in America.
