Over the past year-and-a-half, United States Senator Orrin Hatch has led the fight against Obamacare. While pursuing full repeal, he has also introduced bills to repeal some of the most onerous aspects of Obamacare, including the individual mandate, the employer mandate, the Medicaid maintenance-of-effort requirement, and the medical device tax.
As the ranking Republican on the Senate Finance Committee, Senator Hatch will play a pivotal role in reforming not only the tax code but also the entitlement programs of Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security. Reform of our tax code and entitlement programs is essential if we are going to solve our nation’s debt and deficit problems and restore economic growth and prosperity. At this event, Senator Hatch will discuss the possibilities and challenges for the Super Committee as they attempt to take on these reforms. With respect to Obamacare, the Senator will offer his views on what the Kaiser/HRET Health Benefits survey tells us about the current impact of the law’s 2011 health mandates and how the Institute of Medicine’s recommendations (released Friday, October 7) on additional coverage mandates for the Essential Benefits Package would affect affordability, choice, and subsidies from the government in 2014.
Senator Hatch has represented Utah in the Senate since 1977. During that tenure, he has served in a number of major policy-making roles, including holding the Chairmanship of both the Judiciary and the Health Education, Labor and Pensions Committees. This fall, Senator Hatch will be front-and-center in leading the Senate debate in support of the Hatch/Lee Balanced Budget Amendment to the Constitution. Should the Senate gain a Republican majority in next year’s elections in 2013 the Senator will chair what is arguably the most powerful Committee in Congress – the Senate Finance Committee.
