The Budget Control Act of 2011 created the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction, charged with devising a plan to cut the deficit by at least $1.5 trillion between 2012 and 2021. Newt Gingrich, former Speaker of the House and current candidate for the GOP presidential nomination, recently labeled the “super committee” approach “irrational” and called for scrapping the committee entirely.
In a public policy speech, Speaker Gingrich will flesh out his criticism of the committee and propose an alternative approach to achieve meaningful deficit reduction.
