For the last few decades, the retreat from marriage has been regarded largely as a problem afflicting the poor. But the biggest and most consequential marriage trend of our time concerns the broad center of the society, where marriage, that iconic middle-class institution, is in trouble. As the collapse of marriage spreads to the middle class, it imperils the welfare of children, and opens up a social and cultural divide that threatens social stability writ large.
