Vaclav Havel once said that "the fall of the (Soviet) empire is
an event on the same scale of historical importance as the fall of
the Roman Empire." When the Berlin Wall finally fell on
November 9, 1989, it changed the course of modern history. It
was also the culmination of 40 years of American international
leadership which established an unshakable military and
intellectual bulwark against Soviet military advances and communist
ideology. In this great struggle, The Heritage Foundation
played a significant role throughout the 1980s through its pivotal
support of missile defense and SDI, a robust U.S. military, public
diplomacy efforts and the Reagan Doctrine. As we approach,
the twentieth anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, we invite
you to join Heritage in commemorating what has been called "the
Year of Miracles" and how the United States can use the lessons
learned from the Cold War and apply them to today's foreign
policy.
