Location: The Heritage Foundation's Lehrman Auditorium
Almost ten years ago, Rep. Pete Hoekstra (R-MI) and his
education subcommittee for oversight and investigations published a
report called "Education at a Crossroads," exposing the extent of
federal involvement in public education and the waste, fraud and
abuse associated with federal programs. The report argued that
states and localities could make more efficient and effective use
of the resources and that Washington should get out of the
education policymaking business.
A decade later, federal spending on K-12 education has more than
doubled and the federal role has further expanded under No Child
Left Behind without substantial improvement in student achievement,
adding evidence to Rep. Hoekstra's argument. Joined by former U.S.
Representative and now Vice-Chairman of the Colorado State Board of
Education Bob Schaffer, Rep. Hoekstra will make the case for
returning policymaking authority to state and local education
leaders and for public education transparency to parents and
taxpayers.
