The Palestinian Elections and Middle East Democracy

Location: The Heritage Foundation's Lehrman Auditorium

The January 25th Palestinian elections, which resulted in a landslide victory for Hamas, have altered the Palestinian political landscape. What are the implications of these elections for the Palestinian people, for the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, and for U.S. policy in the Middle East? Will Hamas be forced to moderate its radical Islamic ideology by the practical needs of government and continued international pressure?
