The Future of Democracy in Bangladesh

Location: The Heritage Foundation's Lehrman Auditorium

Since gaining independence in 1971, The People's Republic of Bangladesh has been riven with internal power struggles and economic chaos, while attempting to develop a democratic society. A predominately Islamic country, Bangladesh's representative government is battling poverty, official corruption, organized crime and Islamic militants. Is it possible for Bangladesh to achieve a peaceful, prosperous democracy? Or will internal and external pressures squeeze out any chance of a democracy? Please join us as our panelists discuss the future of democracy in Bangladesh.
