Is Turkey really at a crossroads? Conventional wisdom has it
that the European Union will invite Turkey to begin accession
negotiations in December, culminating in their eventual membership
in the E.U. The truth however is far more complex, for it is the
internal political dynamics of the major European states that will
determine whether this rosy scenario becomes a reality. For
example, the French government has pledged to hold a national
referendum on Turkish accession after the negotiations are
completed; at present three quarters of the French people would
vote against Turkish membership in the E.U.
What is going on here? What role should the United States play in
this Byzantine process? Join us as our distinguished panel of
experts reviews the difficulties facing Turkey and its integration
into the European Union.
