Location: The Heritage Foundation's Lehrman Auditorium
European states pride themselves on their secular approach to
democratic government. But how does European-style secularism
affect religious liberty, the "first freedom" of healthy
democracies? Paul Diamond, a London barrister specializing in
religious liberty, will discuss the legal status of religion in the
United Kingdom and Europe. Mr. Diamond will critique secularism as
an ideology that seeks to drive rival belief systems from the
public square. Kevin Hasson of the Becket Fund will respond with
observations about threats to religious freedom in the United
States, including the potential for legal recognition of same-sex
marriage.
