Ambassador of Australia in Washington D.C. since February 2000, Mr. Thawley currently holds the rank of Deputy Secretary in the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. From April 1996 until his appointment to Washington, he served as national security adviser to Prime Minister John Howard and was responsible for advising on foreign policy, trade, defense, intelligence and security.
