A little more than seven months after being liberated, Iraqis
today face urgent political, economic, and security challenges that
must be addressed to build a stable and democratic Iraq. Dr. Ayad
Allawi, the Chairman of the Security Committee and former President
of Iraq's Governing Council, will outline a strategy for meeting
these challenges. A medical doctor who fled Iraq in 1976, Dr.
Allawi became Secretary General of the Iraqi National Accord, an
opposition group dedicated to overthrowing Saddam Hussein's
dictatorship. He returned to Iraq after the liberation of Baghdad
and was named to the Governing Council and appointed Chairman of
the Council's Security Committee, which is charged with restoring
law and order in postwar Iraq.
