Midge Decter, the influential conservative thinker, has long
been known as one of the most articulate and thoughtful political
writers of her generation. Now she brings her legendary eye to bear
on a man who has emerged from the war on terror as a figure second
only to George W. Bush in his ability to capture the country's
attention - Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld.
Decter was given unprecedented access to the Secretary himself, as
well as to his family, friends, and colleagues. She reports on what
she learned and observed in an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at
the biggest political star - aside from the President himself - in
the Bush Administration in RUMSFELD: A Personal Portrait. A year
and a half after September 11, Rumsfeld was called upon to act on
his belief in a new, leaner, better integrated, more
technologically sophisticated American military when the United
States went to war against Iraq. And in spite of the incessant
second-guessing and criticism his war plan received from the press,
Rumsfeld succeeded in inspiring the American people to take new
pride in the power of the American military.
"A woman who keeps her eyes on the big things and the small ones
and makes the connection between the two."
