The Lessons of History: The Chinese People's Liberation Army at 75

The Heritage Foundation's Lehrman Auditorium

With the armed forces of the People's Republic of China celebrating their 75th Anniversary on August 2, 2002, it seemed an appropriate time to take stock of the world's largest military. The People's Liberation Army (PLA) has officially been in existence for three-quarters of a century, and its history is one filled with turmoil and warfare. In September 2002, a group of PLA specialists gathered to assess what lessons China's soldiers had drawn from the combat history, using Chinese language sources. "The Lessons of History: The Chinese People's Liberation Army at 75" is the result of this intense research and discussion. This compilation of papers by experts will be of interest to those who follow the current rapid development of China's armed forces, in relation to historical challenges, milestones, and lessons learned.
