Communism to Democracy: Lessons from Mongolia on the Eve of the Election Campaign

Location:
The Heritage Foundation's Lehrman Auditorium

As the 20th Century closed, dramatic changes from authoritarian regimes to democratic governments were witnessed around the world. A striking example of such a transformation took place in Mongolia. As leader of the National Counseling Committee of the Mongolian National Democratic Party, Elbegdorj Tsakhia was instrumental in developing the coalition that led to the defeat of the People's Revolutionary Party - a ruling power for 75 years. A new Constitution guaranteeing human rights, democracy and a free market economy was ratified. Crucial steps were taken to solve pressing political, economic, structural and social issues and to firmly continue an open door foreign policy. It is indeed a compelling saga of uniting and leading a movement that brought freedom and liberty to a proud people who call a million square miles in the heart of Eurasia home.

Please join us on Friday, May 30, 2003 at 10:00 a.m. as we explore these breathtaking political changes and the outlook for Mongolia's future. We are honored to host former Prime Minister Elbegdorj as he prepares to return to Mongolia to participate in the Fall campaign leading up to the June 2004 elections.
