The 20th Anniversary of President Reagan's Address to the Nation Announcing The Strategic Defense Initiative

March 23, 2003 marks the 20th Anniversary of President Reagan's decision to begin the Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI). Understanding the government's fundamental obligation to protect America and her citizens, President Reagan outlined a missile defense plan to meet a need that extended beyond Cold War circumstances. Given the anniversary, now is the appropriate time to take stock and recognize how far we have come since President Reagan's speech. Last year President Bush officially withdrew the United States from the 1972 Anti Ballistic Missile Treaty and directed that missile defense systems become operational. Much of the work to achieve this end can be attributed to President Reagan's vision and his courage to proceed with SDI. We cordially invite you to join us at the Heritage Foundation to commemorate this momentous speech.
